Deep in the thornscrub brush of South Texas, in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, you’ll find most of the United States’ remaining wild ocelots. With an estimated population of less than 100, ocelot extinction in the U.S. is a real and dangerous possibility.
Black bears were driven out of Texas in the 1950s but began to naturally recolonize in Big Bend National Park in the 1990s. Borderlands Research Institute wildlife researchers and West Texas ranchers are working together to study the return of these majestic animals.
