We’re working to reduce the amount of food and packaging we use, while simultaneously preventing unnecessary waste from ending up in landfills or our water streams. Material in a landfill takes years to break down and emits pollution in the air, leading to warmer and poorer air quality. When waste ends up in our water, it becomes harmful to both sea animals and humans.
Every packaging change made by H-E-B can have a Texas-sized impact on our environment. It’s our responsibility to actively look for and make sustainable choices in our use of paper & plastic packaging, and we’re delighted to share these choices with our Partners & customers.
H-E-B is a good steward of food recovery and helping feed hungry Texans. We use the EPA Food Recovery Hierarchy System to minimize our output and maximize the food we recover & share with those in need, feed animals, and more.

We’re proud to offer you an abundant selection of seasonal, local, and organic produce & floral choices at your neighborhood H-E-B.
The top two contributors to greenhouse gases in the U.S. are Transportation and Electricity, making up over 54% of our country’s emissions today (Source: EPA). Greenhouse gases are molecules in the air, like carbon dioxide, that build up in our atmosphere and trap the sun’s heat from leaving. This warming effect has a major impact on our Texas land, water and air, so H-E-B is focused on both conserving the amount of energy we use, as well as diversifying the method in which it’s generated. Our operations are centered around creating a more resilient Texas today and for the future.
H-E-B has over 62 rooftop solar panel systems in place – 55 store and 7 facility installments. This robust network helps to diversify our overall energy sources and reduce our reliance on only non-renewable resources.
H-E-B runs an efficient transportation fleet that carries goods to you across Texas. We closely monitor our company’s transportation fuel usage as a founding member of the EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership.
While we’re taking many actions to reduce our own footprint, we’re also proud to support hundreds of non-profits working to conserve and protect Texas’ land, water, air, for all the people, plants, and animals who call this state home.
It’s been said that children are our future – and we couldn’t agree more. That’s why H-E-B is a longstanding supporter of youth environmental literacy nonprofit Ecorise.
Deep in the thornscrub brush of South Texas, in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, you’ll find most of the United States’ remaining wild ocelots. With an estimated population of less than 100, ocelot extinction in the U.S. is a real and dangerous possibility.
