protecting here.

One thing every Texan has in common is our love for this state. And as Texans ourselves at H-E-B, we couldn’t agree more. That’s why we’re committed to ensuring that our state is just as great 100 years from now as it is today through H-E-B’s commitment: Our Texas, Our Future.

This is a promise to you, our customers, that we will help preserve Texas’ natural resources: through how we source products and what we carry, to how we manage food waste and recycling efforts, to investing in renewable energy. Together we can have an impact and protect our treasured Texas land, water, and air for future generations.

Our Sustainability Journey

Why We Care

At H-E-B, there are 8 million reasons we care about conserving and protecting Texas’ resources. That’s because 8 million families rely on us for their food, and as a company, we rely on the richness of Texas land, water, and air, to supply that food.

What We’re Doing

Everything we do has an impact, and that’s why we’re doing more to help preserve and replenish Texas’ natural resources. We feel a deep responsibility to invest money, time, and resources to continue improving operations like our waste output and energy usage. We also commit to making it easier for customers like you to live greener by amplifying the selection of environmentally-conscious features on our shelves so all Texans are armed with the knowledge and tools to make eco-friendly choices.

Together we can help conserve and protect our treasured Texas land, water, and air for generations to come.

Waste

We’re working to reduce the amount of food and packaging we use, while simultaneously preventing unnecessary waste from ending up in landfills or our water streams. Material in a landfill takes years to break down and emits pollution in the air, leading to warmer and poorer air quality. When waste ends up in our water, it becomes harmful to both sea animals and humans.

We’re Improving Our Packaging at Your H-E-B

Whether it’s the food you eat or household goods you need every day, making small changes can make a big difference! Today, H-E-B is proud to partner with leading sustainable seafood organizations and suppliers and offer many household essentials that use recycled or recyclable packaging, plant-based ingredients and more.

Energy

The top two contributors to greenhouse gases in the U.S. are Transportation and Electricity, making up over 54% of our country’s emissions today (Source: EPA). Greenhouse gases are molecules in the air, like carbon dioxide, that build up in our atmosphere and trap the sun’s heat from leaving. This warming effect has a major impact on our Texas land, water and air, so H-E-B is focused on both conserving the amount of energy we use, as well as diversifying the method in which it’s generated. Our operations are centered around creating a more resilient Texas today and for the future.

Energy

Installing Solar

H-E-B has over 62 rooftop solar panel systems in place – 55 store and 7 facility installments. This robust network helps to diversify our overall energy sources and reduce our reliance on only non-renewable resources.

Deep in the thornscrub brush of South Texas, in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, you’ll find most of the United States’ remaining wild ocelots. With an estimated population of less than 100, ocelot extinction in the U.S. is a real and dangerous possibility.
